Authors are encouraged to submit new papers to INFORMS journals by means of a style file template, which includes the journal title. However, use of a template does not certify that the paper has been accepted for publication in the named journal. INFORMS journal templates are for the exclusive purpose of submitting to an INFORMS journal and should not be used to distribute the papers in print or online or to submit the papers to another publication.

Appendix to Creating Work Breaks From Available Idleness
We show how dynamic priority (DP) rules for assigning available service representatives to arriving customers in customer contact centers can be used to create effective work breaks for the service representatives from naturally available idleness, assuming that the service system is staffed adequately to provide non-negligible idleness. We start by establishing many-server heavy-traffic limits...
متن کاملHeavy-traffic limits for server idle times with customary server-assignment rules
Sun and Whitt (2017) developed a class of server-assignment rules that can help create effective breaks for servers from naturally available idleness. They found that the standard longest-idle-server-first rule and the alternative random routing generate breaks too infrequently. This paper provides theoretical justifications for these empirical findings by establishing the many-server heavy-tra...
متن کاملCollaboration in Networks: Architectures, Bottlenecks and Throughput
Motivated by the trend towards more collaboration in work flows, we study stochastic processing networks where some activities require the simultaneous collaboration of multiple human resources. Collaboration introduces resource synchronization requirements that are not captured in the standard procedure (formalized through a static planning problem) to identify bottlenecks and theoretical capa...
متن کاملQueue-and-Idleness-Ratio Controls in Many-Server Service Systems
Motivated by call centers, we study large-scale service systems with multiple customer classes and multiple agent pools, each with many agents. We propose a family of routing rules called Queue-and-Idleness-Ratio (QIR) rules. A newly available agent next serves the customer from the head of the queue of the class (from among those he is eligible to serve) whose queue length most exceeds a speci...
متن کاملCollaboration and Multitasking in Networks: Architectures, Bottlenecks, and Capacity
M by the trend toward more collaboration in work flows, we study networks where some activities require the simultaneous processing by multiple types of multitasking human resources. Collaboration imposes constraints on the capacity of the process because multitasking resources have to be simultaneously at the right place. We introduce the notions of collaboration architecture and unavoidable b...
